CX IS in the process of further automating its security procedures to prevent containers leaving the City Deep terminal under false pretences.
We're now moving to a situation where, using digital technology, we will photograph every driver and every container that is released through the gate. This information will be stored on disc so that it can be produced as evidence in court where required.
People can be bribed and intimidated, and may sometimes withhold evidence in a fraud case. With this kind of cold, hard evidence, criminals will more easily be brought to book, senior manager CX operations, Bux Coetzee, told FTW.
Once CX has been granted its financial allocation, the system will be set in motion.
It will reduce the number of gate guards required from around 50 to approximately 10. Those not required will be redeployed elsewhere.
Over the years CX has used video cameras to keep track of drivers and their loads, but storage of the bulky evidence was a major problem.
With new technology the images can be down-loaded onto a hard disc which requires minimal storage space, said Coetzee.
