THE GAME of "special clearance" for legitimate urgent airfreight consignments at Johannesburg International Airport (JIA) is now being played to new rules from customs.
At end-August, they refused "special clearance" status for a number of categories of imports blaming importers and agents for abusing this facility.
According to the current list of "special clearance" categories, issued to FTW by Safcor Panalpina, only the following eight cargo types will now be considered: Spares for grounded aircraft; blood and human tissues; cut flowers; highly perishable products; daily newspapers; highly radioactive materials/short life radioactive materials; live animals; and video & other tapes for same-day broadcast.
The warning from Safcor is that customs will only grant "special clearance" status to such consignments "if they consider the criteria governing their degree of urgency legitimate".
So youÕve got to prove your case.
Customs requires a letter of motivation from the importer for each consignment, detailing why he is appealing for "special status" for that particular shipment - and an original written under his own letterhead. No copies are acceptable.
