CT airport to develop cargo facilities

The realignment of the Cape Town International Airport (CTIA) primary runway will create the much-needed space to develop cargo facilities for increasing freight volumes.

That’s the word from Deon Cloete, Airports Company South Africa (Acsa) general manager for CTIA, who said construction of the new runway was expected to start next year.

“The new runway, which will include the construction of parallel and rapid exit taxiways, is a priority for the airport. It will take the airport from 30 flights per hour per day to around 45 flights, increasing our capacity by 50%,” he said.

It would also create the space to develop more cargo facilities, he said, as the new runway would be constructed away from the current runway.

“We spent five years planning for this runway which was given environmental approval earlier this year.” He said the construction of a second runway was part of a long-term strategy
