Corridors hold the key to economic growth in South Africa and beyond, according to the National Development Plan 2030 presented to parliament in August by the National Planning Commission headed by Trevor Manuel. Infrastructure developments that “should be prioritised” include a “national development corridor” between Durban and Gauteng by 2030 – including a new dug-out port on the site of the old Durban airport – investing in a new heavyhaul rail corridor to the Waterberg coal field, upgrading the central basin coal network, and expanding export capacity on the line to Richards Bay.
