Coronavirus negatively impacts the Chinese community in SA

Chinese nationals living in the country have expressed concern over the effect of the outbreak on their businesses of the coronavirus - even though there have been no confirmed cases in South Africa yet.

Chinese restauranteurs say suppliers are refusing to deliver due to prejudice and stereotype.

The SABC has reported that health authorities in Limpopo are monitoring the first person in South Africa suspected of having contracted the deadly new virus.

“The patient is a baggage handler at a cross-border checkpoint between Botswana and South Africa and was admitted to Ellisras Hospital in Lephalale, a coal-mining town. He went to the doctor complaining of a high fever,” the SABC reported.

The health department has deployed nurses and other health officers at the Groblersbrug border post between South Africa and Botswana to monitor travellers, with elevated temperatures the greatest concern. – Zoë van Rooyen
