‘Containers to remain the mode of choice'

The containerised share of seaborne reefer shipments is likely to continue to increase, with approximately half of the world’s perishable products currently shipped in containers. That’s the view of Safmarine’s SA reefer executive John Mac Donald who believes reefer containers are also likely to remain the longterm choice for South African exporters. “It’s a trend which is further supported by reduced investments in new refrigerated/conventional vessels compared to investments in new, energy-efficient container ships with increased reefer capacity,” he said.
