Data from Container Trade Statistics (CTS) – the exclusive agent for World Liner Data Limited (WLDL) - showed global volume increased 1% in May year-on-year compared with 4.3% in April.
The Eurozone debt crisis depressed European consumer demand, said the company report, resulting in an import container volume slide of 7.4% in May. European exports, which started the year well, weakened to a near flat 0.9% uptick.
Nor did Asia look good, as imports fell 4.5% in May and exports grew 2.4%. Imports into North America (Canada, the US and Mexico) increased 7.4% in container volume, but exports fell 7.6%.
