The revival of the Port of Maputo highlights the benefits of private sector partnerships, offering hope for Durban and Richards Bay. It started in April 2003, when Mozambique’s government granted the public-private partnership that was Maputo Port Development Company a 15-year concession to operate, rehabilitate and develop Maputo Port. The concession supported the Maputo Development Corridor initiative to rehabilitate the traditional link between northern South Africa and Maputo. This attracted more than $100 million in initial investment. More investment has followed Ongoing investment at the Port of Maputo highlights what can be achieved.since the concession was extended to 2058. The latest investment has been a $164 million expansion of thecontainer terminal. The funds will go towards doubling the terminal’s capacity to 530 000 TEUs a year and deepening the berth to -16 metres for post-Panamax vessels. ER
