THE DEPARTMENT of Trade and Industry (DoT&I) recently released details of the Industrial Development Zones (IDZs) planned for Johannesburg International Airport (JIA) and City Deep. According to this departmental report, the JIA IDZ will cover a total area of 726-hectares comprising three sites on the southern, northern and eastern boundaries of the airport. Meanwhile, the proposed IDZ at City Deep is an area of 848-ha sited to the west, north and east of the present container terminal. Any comments from the freight industry and other interested parties are still welcome, according to the DoT&I's P T Makhetha. These, FTW was told, should reach him before the end of this month. Makhetha's fax number at the department is: (012) 320-5502. FTW understands that the originally planned IDZ management structures, and the number of possible sites around the country, are currently being reviewed by government and certain changes might be made.
