Companies within the freight industry can increase employees’ productivity at a minimal fee through a mobile health clinic launched by public benefit organisation, Siyakhana Health Trust. The R600 000 mobile clinic from the East London-based charity provides on-site visits at a minimal cost to small- and medium-sized companies, while employees and their dependents receive services from the clinic free of charge. Additionally, the cost of the mobile clinic visit would be far less to employers than the cost of absent workers due to off-site healthcare visits or absenteeism. The clinic offers companies a comprehensive programme to implement a workplace health programme, as well assist in the latest labour regulations around health and safety. “The benefits for companies include higher productivity in the short to long term because of improvements in the health of a company’s employees as well as ensuring that companies are compliant with the law,” project director Dr Simeon Odugwu said. “The investment by companies is very affordable, but more importantly, the approach keeps employees at work and optimally productive.”
