After a four year period as Transnet chief harbour master, Captain Mike Brophy, has retired. In 2006 he succeeded Captain Eddie Bremner as the country’s chief harbour master after a career lasting more than 30 years with Transnet and a career at sea before that. Brophy hails from the small Irish village of Crosshaven and went to sea as a young lad with Irish Shipping, before rising in rank and transferring to other companies and eventually to Safmarine, which brought him into contact with South Africa, a country he says he fell in love with as soon as he saw it.
