NOW MIGHT be the time for importers to be checking up on their customs code numbers, warns Safcor, with customs' recent tightening of the requirements for registration.
If an importer has changed the company name, address or contact details, a re-registration is necessary - and additional information is now required.
Certified copies of the following documents now have to be submitted with each application for a customs code number:
l The business's registration certificate;
l The ID document of the importer (if an individual) - or of the m.d. if the importer is a company;
l The ID documents of the partners in a partnership - or the members of a close corporation.
Note: The income tax numbers of the individuals also have to go on the registration form - and if any are not SA citizens, certified copies of passports are required.
Just to make it tough for you, original application forms now have to be submitted - no faxes, e-mails, do-it-by-phone or tatty photocopies any more.
This could mean your registration might take longer than before. And something to watch out for here, according to Safcor, is to make sure you comply with all these formalities before placing overseas orders.
Otherwise you might face unwanted storage charges if you have to wait till you've got your application registered.
