News was still sketchy this morning following a massive explosion at the Engen refinery in Wentworth, south of Durban, at around 7am this morning.
The cause of the explosion is still unknown, but according to news reports there have been no injuries.
Quoted in News24, KwaZulu-Natal emergency services spokesperson Robert McKenzie said that six people had been treated for respiratory difficulties as a result of smoke inhalation.
According to the report, the refinery was shut for about four months in 2008 following an explosion, while in 2007, a fire caused by a lightning strike to a fuel storage tank burnt for three days and cost the refinery R210 million.
