Cargo volumes break records at HKIA

Total cargo and airmail throughput at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) exceeded the five million tonne mark for the first time in 2017, with cargo showing steady growth in December.

“HKIA is the first airport in the world to have ever handled over five million tonnes of cargo and airmail in a year,” said Airport Authority (AA) Hong Kong CEO, Fred Lam.

Cargo throughput at the airport in 2017 increased by 9.2% year-on-year to 4.94 million tonnes and by 6.3% to 462 000 tonnes in December last year over the same period in 2016.

According to Lam, December’s growth was largely driven by transhipments and exports which both rose by 8% compared to 2016, with traffic to Europe and India having increased most significantly during the month.

He pointed out that HKIA would be pushing ahead with a number of development projects to further enhance its cargo services in 2018.

“In addition to the Iata CEIV Pharma Partner Airport accreditation achieved in 2017, the AA is also launching a tender to develop a premium logistics warehouse in Kwo Lo Wan to enhance the handling of e-commerce shipments,” said Lam
