Cargo throughput continues to strengthen at Chinese airport

Hong Kong International Airport.

Cargo volumes handled at the Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) registered strong growth for the month of July this year according to a statement released by the airport yesterday (Sunday).

Cargo volumes were up by 11% to 422 000 tonnes compared to the same month in 2016.

“Exports continued to lead the strong growth in cargo throughput, coinciding with an improvement in global trade,” said a spokesperson for the airport.

Exports experienced 15% growth while transhipments also rose by 10% with Europe recording the most significant increase among Hong Kong’s key trading regions.

In the first seven months of 2017, an 11.3% year-on-year growth – to 2.7 million tonnes – was recorded for cargo volumes handled at HKIA.

On a rolling 12-month basis, HKIA handled 4.8 million tonnes of cargo, recording an increase of 9.5%.
