P&O NEDLLOYD has set up a dedicated Cargo Care unit within its integrated logistics department to offer shippers advice on new equipment and improved methods of shipping specific commodities. "The unit will verify that all processes that apply to the carriage of special cargo are capable of delivering products that conform to quality requirements," says Cargo Care specialist, Dalena Smit. "It will focus primarily on hazardous cargo, taints, out of gauge cargo, containers requiring temperature control and containers requiring special stowage positions. "For new or special shipments, such as the recent move of citrus in containers to Japan, we will investigate the countryÕs regulations and client requirements regarding the shipment of that commodity. We advise clients on which equipment should be used and under what conditions it should be shipped. Once the containers are in transit, we monitor the shipments should any irregularities occur."
