IF ALL goes according to plan, Cape Town harbour should soon have a new port manager.
Almost two years since the departure of the last full-time incumbent - when Niels Hubinger moved from the port management position to a new post in the PPECB (Perishable Products Export Control Board) - the port has been languishing under a number of acting managers.
This, according to port users, has been a very unsatisfactory position - a busy port with no senior party to guide its activities for so long. This would never happen in the private sector, said one. A business left that long without a manager would be in a serious state of decline.
But the situation is about to change, according to PE port manager, Jan Jansen, and the latest to carry that acting title in Cape Town.
The first round of interviews is due for this month, he said. This to be followed by a second round of interviews, where necessary.
Probably a month to two months after that, the post will finally be filled.
So June should mark the point when the Port of Cape Town eventually comes under full control again.
Cape Town port manager will be named soon
