Provincial trade, investment and tourism promotion agency, Wesgro, has condemned this morning’s (Wednesday) shooting incident at the Cape Town International Airport (CTIA).
“Reports indicate that the shooting was a gang related incident and thus should not be construed as related to the OR Tambo heists which occurred earlier in the year,” said a spokesman for the organisation.
According to Deon Cloete, general manager of the airport, no road closures or flight delays were experienced as a result of the shooting and the airport was operating “as per usual”.
At least two people were injured in what appears to be a gang-related shooting. According to police two people were shot in the incident that took place at the drop-off point at the airport. While it remains unclear how many people were involved in the shooting and police investigations are still ongoing, it is believed a man in his 50’s was the target.
In a statement, police said a number of suspects travelling in a vehicle opened fire on the man before fleeing the scene. A stray bullet hit a passer-by.
Both men were hospitalized after the incident.
Unconfirmed news reports today indicated the man targeted in the shooting was the leader of the Sexy Boys gang, Jerome "Donkie" Booysen, and that the shooting was related to clashes between the Cape’s notorious numbers gangs. Neither the police nor airport officials could verify or confirm these allegations.
“We are confident that the authorities will do everything necessary to investigate and bring to book those involved in the shooting that occurred at Cape Town International Airport this morning,” said the Wesgro spokesperson.
