The construction of the US$50-million Rivungo canal between Zambia and Angola is making headway, with 10 kilometres of the total 15-kilometre canal already completed.
Zambian transport minister, Yamfwa Mukanga, was quoted by The Post Online as saying that the Angolan government would contribute 70 percent of funds and the remainder would be provided by the Zambian government. "The canal will facilitate trade between the two countries and enable Zambia to have access to the sea through Angola," Mukanga reportedly said.
The Times of Zambia reported that construction of a border post would commence before the end of the year. Work on the canal is expected to be completed by then too.
