CANADA WILL implement new import requirements for wood packaging in January next year. In essence the entry of untreated, non-manufactured wood packaging from any part of the world excluding the US will be prohibited. The same will apply for wood packaging transiting through the United States en route to Canada. Entry will be authorised only if the material has been officially treated by one of several methods specified in the rules. A logo or mark, officially endorsed by the NPPO of the country from which the wood packaging originates, must be permanently affixed to each unit of wood packaging. “The new regulations will replace those that are currently in place and we have already seen some enforcement of these,” CargoCare managing director Roland Raath told FTW. “Failure to comply will result in delivery delays and expenses that will be for the shipper’s account,” he said. Full details of the new requirements can be viewed at: www.inspection.gc.ca/english/plaveg/protect/dir/d-9808de.shtml
