Bunker fuel prices at the Port of Durban reached their highest level ever this week due to “very tight” availability according to global energy, petrochemicals, metals and agriculture information provider, S&P Global Platts.

The Engen refinery in Durban was shut down in February to undergo maintenance which led to the tight availability of bunker fuel at the port. Platts is expecting the refinery to become partially operational by the end of the week for spot sales.

Platts assessed 180 centistoke fuel oil at the port at US$440 per metric tonne on Tuesday, the highest since the assessment started in July 2016.
