Buffalo grows export market

China an area of future expansion THREE YEARS since its launch as a two-person operation, logistics company Buffalo Freight is charging ahead. “We do 90% seafreight but we’re bloody good at airfreight as well,” says the company’s straight-talking managing director Margrit Wolff, who has notched up more than 20 years experience in the industry. She holds a 50% share in the company. Niche specialisation has been the focus so far with particular emphasis on the import of hazardous chemicals, and clothing and textiles. In terms of exports, the US market is a strong contender. “We were MSC’s sixth largest customer to the US last year and are likely to be number three this year,” she told FTW. While the company’s import base provides the bulk of its volumes, exports are also growing at a rapid rate. In order to cater for the growth, Buffalo intends opening an office in Durban. The Gauteng head office based in Booysens Reserve south of Johannesburg will move to bigger premises in the same area next month. Areas of focus for future expansion include Mainland China. “We already have sizeable traffic from there and are keen to grow it,” says Wolff. Africa is another region whose potential cannot be ignored, she added.
