The Federation of East and Southern African Road Transport Associations (Fesarta) will hold a meeting at 2pm today to drive awareness about new systems at the Beitbridge Border Post between South Africa and Zimbabwe.
The processing of trucks at the previously problematic crossing has improved remarkably since the introduction of certain initiatives towards the end of October.
Minor challenges remain though, with a backlog of trucks south of the border reported by Fesarta’s Transit Assistance Bureau this morning.
A queue of eleven trucks in the northbound lane on the N1, however, is nothing compared to the chaotic congestion at the transit during the months of August, September and early October.
Today’s meeting for transporters, clearing agents and runners will be held at the boardroom of the new terminal operated by Zimborders, the consortium that now runs facilities north of the Limpopo River as a concessionaire.
Fesarta chief director Mike Fitzmaurice said it had been agreed at an earlier meeting that awareness of the border systems was key.
He added that a new boom gates operating system would soon be introduced.
It is important that border operators and long-distance hauliers familiarise themselves with systems at Beitbridge, Fitzmaurice emphasised.
