Freight & Trading Weekly is about to go daily. This is the last edition of the 47-year old publication as a weekly printed newspaper. From May 1 our news will appear daily as we merge the writing resources of FTW and FTW Online into a substantial online offering called simply, Freight News.

Less time-sensitive features will still be distributed in both print and digital form. If you are already registered as a reader of www.FTWonline.co.za, the change will be seamless. If not, register now. It is free.

After 35 years as editor of FTW, Joy Orlek will step down from her role at the end of this month and hand over the reins to deputy editor Eugene Goddard. “The past almost four decades have seen dramatic change – from the introduction of containerisation in the seventies to online freight media which we pioneered some 15 years ago," she says.

Incoming editor Eugene Goddard is a seasoned journalist with 26 years of experience. He has, in his two years at FTW, gained a firm grasp of the industry and is well placed to take the publication into the digital era. Eugene started his career in 1994 during the practical part of his diploma studies at Pretoria Technikon.

From a rookie reporter and photographer at the Vryheid Herald in Northern KwaZulu-Natal, he proceeded to work as writer, photojournalist, bureau correspondent and multi-media freelancer for The Citizen and City Press among other titles.

Prior to joining the team at Now Media, holding company of FTW, he was a self-employed media consultant and contributor for several commercial concerns.Joy will continue to be involved with FTW in a sub-editing role.

Commenting on the amalgamation of FTW and FTW Online into one digital title, Now Media sales director Linda van der Pol said: “There are five reasons to welcome Freight News.”

• In the past, 25% of our journalists’ effort went into FTW Online and 75% into the print edition. Now, with all of our journalists focusing on Freight News, you can expect a big lift in the online content.

• First with freight news. That is our goal. Instant daily distribution will make content more relevant to readers and impactful for advertisers.

• Deeper, wider penetration within companies that import and export. Anyone in a company can register. It’s free.

 • Even smaller freight service suppliers can make a big impact. Costs are based on impressions served to readers which can be capped according to budget.

• Opportunities for us to publish sponsored content, and offer turnkey webinar opportunities and surveys.
