Beira has seen an increase in container traffic during the Covid-19 pandemic, according to Jan de Vries, the chief executive officer of Cornelder Mozambique, which operates the port.He told Radio Mozambique that Beira was on track to handle 2.5 million tons of cargo in 2020.Beira benefited from the shut-down and delays at ports in South Africa and elsewhere in the region, according to De Vries. He said the port was handling large volumes of foodstuffs and fertilisers bound for landlocked countries such as Zimbabwe and Zambia.“The ships and the trucks are coming, and we have created conditions for this,” he said. “At the same time, it’s important that our work does not stop.” De Vries said that in order to combat the coronavirus that had caused Covid-19, more than 30 disinfectant posts had been set up on the port premises
