DEBATE OVER deregulation of the US shipping industry is continuing with no prospect of any change in US shipping regulations this year.

That's according to SafBank chief executive Mike Veary who was in the US recently. There were conflicting reports. One indicated that legislation was likely to be passed this year, but two days later indications were that they were nowhere near agreement. Once legislation is passed, the fundamental difference for shipping lines and customers could be less regulation in pricing, allowing the customer more freedom to negotiate confidential contracts.

But for now, it's a question of wait and see.
