The African Union has set itself the goal of developing a clear framework for the continent, mapping out the next 50 years of development and growth. As part of its 50th anniversary celebrations, the organisation is taking the time to reflect on where it wants Africa to be in 50 years’ time, said AU chairperson Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma. “But this framework will be more than just a plan for Africa as it will have concrete benchmarks and targets worked into it to make sure we are reaching the goals set out.” She said the first draft of the framework would be presented to heads of state in January next year and would eventually become the guiding light for the continent’s development. At the same time three task teams have been established to focus on infrastructure, skills and industrialisation, as these will play critical roles in the continent reaching its goals. “It is important to have a very clear vision and strategy of where we are heading but at the same time we need to make sure we are not just talking about where we want to be. It is time for some concrete action.” She said in celebrating 50 years of the AU – and its predecessor the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) – the organisation would use the unique opportunity to accelerate a forward-looking agenda for Africa. “It provides a unique opportunity, and comes at a moment when Africa is on the rise and must therefore build its confidence in its future.”
