THE ASSOCIATION of Ships Agents and Brokers of South Africa is engaging with the authorities to find ways of making best safety practice from around the world the norm in the local industry. The move coincides with the recent celebration of International Maritime Day, which chose as its theme "Safer Shipping Demands a Safety Culture". International Maritime Organisation secretary-general William O'Neil called on the profession to adopt a safety culture willingly, as opposed to mere compliance, thus ensuring that the spirit as well as the letter of the requirements are embraced.
