Airline cargo business finds a new home

Basking in its new, ultra-modern cargo facility at Al Maktoum International Airport, Emirates SkyCargo has found a new home from its previous location at Dubai International Airport.

On the apron outside Emirates SkyCentral in the Dubai World Central complex is its relocated freighter fleet of 15 aircraft, all looking to serve the surrounding area’s factories and forwarders. It is also close by a dedicated corridor to the Jebel Ali Port and Free Zone, while international and freighter cargo is moved 24/7 by truck between the two airports via a bonded ‘virtual’ corridor.

A reason for the 77-kilometre move from Dubai International was the extra space available for the cargo industry’s future expansion. The carrier is planning on developing the land over time to increase cargo handling capacity to an envisioned 12 million tonnes annually by 2050, from the current 2.3m tonnes.
