Agreement signed on water security

The latest government move to improve SA’s water security made news this week as an agreement was signed between SA and Netherlands water bodies.

This will lead to SA’s Water Research Commission (WRC) and its Dutch counterpart, KWR (a world leader in water technology innovation), collaborating on water security and health matters. All this in light of climate change expected to significantly affect the sustainability of water supplies in SA in the coming decades.

The WRC will have access to KWR’s Watershare programme and to its knowledge and experiences in the global water sector. Joint research will also be conducted.

This follows discussions between senior government members of the two countries about the SA water crisis – with the Dutch delegation led by Prime Minister, Mark Rutte, including Henk Ovik, the Netherlands’ special envoy for international water affairs.
