African market gets serious about airfreight security

The African airfreight market has put its money where its mouth when it comes to improving security standards. That much was clear when Ministers and highlevel officials recently met in Abuja, Nigeria, to assess and evaluate current security and screening facilities across the board. Among the resolutions identified was the need to strengthen and promote security through passenger and cargo screening procedures. “The introduction of Part 108 by the Civil Aviation Authority approximately 12 months ago, as well as increased passenger and cargo volumes to and from a multitude of African countries, has inspired galvanised actions from the main players in the airport and related industries,” says Greg Dixon, sales and marketing director of South African-based security detection products provider Hissco. The company represents one of the world’s largest manufacturers of X-Ray systems. Dixon believes the African market is ideally poised to make great strides in bolstering and improving its screening procedures and requisite screening equipment. “At present, Hissco supplies a number of security detection solutions into the likes of Sudan (United Nations), Mozambique, Gabon, Lesotho, Ghana, Botswana, Angola, Tanzania, Swaziland, Uganda, DRC, Zambia and Sierra Leone.”
