HUNDREDS OF people flocked to the Hosea Kutako Airport 45km from Windhoek for a glimpse of the world’s biggest freighter, the Antonov V-225, as its 32 wheels touched down on the runway last month.
The aircraft was originally designed for the transportation of the Russian Space Shuttle ‘Buran’.
Woker Freight Services, a subsidiary of Manica Group Namibia, was the agent for the aircraft, spokesperson Andrea Calitz said this week.
The Antonov was chartered to deliver 112 tons of cargo for the huge Greater Plutonia, a floating production storage offloading vessel employed in offshore oil and gas exploration.
Woker Freight Services oversaw the customs documentation and transhipment of three huge cables, each weighing 37 tons, as well as additional equipment. Wesbank Transport moved the cargo overland to Walvis Bay.
Rennies Consolidated, a division of Manica Group Namibia, stored the cargo before it was loaded onto the Greater Plutonia which arrived at the end of last month.
