ON-THE-JOB experience is what ultimately tests a student's understanding of any training course, which is why the Maritime Institute has pioneered a scheme which adds a 30-day work experience programme to its training courses.
Ollen James Ndlovu, one of the Maritime Institute's graduates of the certificate course in Customs Clearing and Airfreight, recently spent 30 days at Federal Express. And that was where his real understanding of what he had learned began, he told FTW.
The programme is carefully monitored, says the Maritime Institute's Peter Fitt. Once we are satisfied that a student has met our requirements and is of the right calibre, the 30-day programme will be arranged.
FedEx and Manica are among several companies which have agreed to participate.
In some ways it can be regarded as an extended interview, says Fitt. If the company is happy with the student, it may ask him to stay on. If not, it has given something back to the
industry.
