Wine industry tunes into ‘direct-to-market’ solution

Global logistics company Tigers plans to roll out its eShop locally, following its “great success” in South East Asia.

“With Tigers’ full e-Commerce suite in full flight, the natural progression is to provide local and international brands with better platforms in the local market,” said Paul Lawrence, managing director, Tigers South Africa.

He said the Western Cape was home to several small and medium enterprise (SME) brands that “fit in perfectly” with the Tigers brand.

“Our offering of direct-to-market fulfilment offers these brands the opportunity to expand globally in small quantities, while retaining greater brand control,” commented Lawrence.

He told FTW that TigersWINE was a prime example.

“This solution enables wine producers to go direct-tomarket on both B2B and B2C models, giving wine farms better control of product, brand, and pricing.”

Lawrence added that through Tiger Fresh – the perishables forwarding division of Tigers – the company had “great access” to the perishables market.

“The Cape region is a strong area for agriculture which fits in well with this offering.” He said that for growing brands, Tigers’ e-Commerce solution sales platform was critical for faster market penetration and offered much better margins. “These are two key elements for a brand to become sustainable and profitable for further expansion,” said Lawrence, pointing out that in the perishables sector, better IT infrastructure for document management would “significantly” improve the export and import processes.

“Growth in e-commerce will put pressure on the logistics providers to be able to provide factory-todoor fulfilment. With the poor capabilities of current e-Commerce marketplaces, there will be a strong focus on omni-channel fulfilment to allow multiple sales platforms for a brand,” he said.
