The Western Cape government announced on Thursday that it had received R25 million to help mitigate the impact of the ongoing drought in the Central Karoo and Garden Route regions.
Western Cape Minister of Agriculture, Ivan Meyer, said that the additional aid would help to contribute towards the livelihood of the region, particularly the livestock, which had been severely affected.
“The funds will assist in alleviating some of the impacts of the drought, bringing much-needed relief to some of the most severely affected,” said Meyer.
Situated in the Beaufort West municipality, the Central Karoo is known for its dry plains and sheep farming, and while it doesn’t need a lot of water the area has been stricken with a debilitating drought. As a result farmers have been unable to feed their livestock, with many of the animals succumbing to heat.
