Swiss logistics multinational Kuehne+Nagel (K+N) and Norwegian aquaculture innovator ScaleAQ have announced the introduction of fully traceable biofuel cargo in a bid to decarbonize sea freight.

The exercise in ESG (environmental, social responsibility, and governance) involves the production of next-generation biofuel made from waste-based feedstock that is recycled back into cargo dynamics.

ScaleAQ believes the fuel will entirely rid K+N's supply chain of CO2 emissions. K+N will, in turn, endeavour to assist ScaleAQ by involving shipping lines and energy enterprises in the decarbonisation exercise.

According to initial projections, the biofuel will strip 960 tonnes of greenhouse gases out of the supply chain from Norway, the world's biggest exporter of fish, for the rest of the year, said Hanne Digre, sustainability director at ScaleAQ.
