Work is progressing on the upgrading of the road link between Mozambique and Tanzania. The African Development Bank (AfDB) is providing US$34 million to the Mozambican government for the construction of the 35-km Phase II of the Nambungali-Roma road, which forms part of the Mueda-Negomano road upgrade between Mozambique and Tanzania. The project will upgrade a 150-km gravel road between the towns of Mueda and Nogomano in Mozambique to a paved road, and provide a one-stop border post between the two countries. According to an AfDB statement, the completion of Phase II will complement a recently constructed Unity Bridge to reduce travel to the ports of Pemba in Mozambique and Mtwara in Tanzania. “Bridging the infrastructure gap, particularly to increase national and regional connectivity, is key to the efforts to eradicate poverty and to accelerate economic growth,” said Mozambican finance minister Adriano Maleiane at the signing ceremony earlier this year. Mozambique has also received an AfDB grant to finance the Mueda-Roma Road Project as part of the Mtwara Development Corridor Phase II. The corridor is a spatial development initiative for southern Tanzania, northern Mozambique, northern and central Malawi, and eastern and northern Zambia.
