YET ANOTHER addition to Durban’s warehousing capacity is the upgrade of the premises of Siyakha Logistics in Jacobs. The two owners of the business, Dags Elahi and Subree Palani, applied some innovative thinking to the revamp of the 6000m2 facility. “One of the key elements is the use of an ordinary road culvert as the basis for a platform which is the perfect height to load and offload from a container on a standard container trailer. The dimensions of the culvert top make a perfect operating platform for a hyster that can position pallets at a height where other hysters can then remove them for placement on the warehouse floor, and vice versa for loading. “This does not require the offloading hysters to keep moving up and down a ramp on to the loading platform, which is both time-consuming and increases wear and tear on the hyster significantly,” says Elahi. The new layout also provides for a complete in at one end and out at the other drive-through which reduces the need for time-consuming shuffling of trailers to enter and exit. Siyakha handles general cargo.
