Extended
concrete apron measures 337 metres long
EXTENSIONS AT Durban International Airport (DIA) were officially opened this month by the Airports Company of South Africa (ACSA), following the lengthening and widening of Bravo concrete apron.
The extended concrete apron measures 337 metres long, enabling the airport to better
fulfil its role as a diversion
airport for Johannesburg International. DIA can now also accommodate additional demands in operational capacity, including type A-300 aircraft.
The airport recorded a 9% growth in air traffic over the past four months, attributed to the increased number of aircraft introduced to ferry passengers to Johannesburg for their overseas connections. British Airways and South African Airways recently withdrew their direct flights between Durban and Europe.
The completed contract included realigning half a kilometre of service road and various electrical services.
Durban International Airport is not dead and buried, the airport project and property manager Sean van der Valk said. Nor would it be snared into the continuing debate over the proposed new La Mercy International Airport.
La Mercy will happen when it happens but we are getting on with the work at hand, he said.
