DURBAN’S CAPACITY to clean container tanks received a boost when the ultra-modern cleaning facility at Unitainer in Bayhead commenced operations. The multimillion rand facility will improve efficiencies and quality of cleaning, according to Unitainer GM, Mike Fry. “We sought the best operation to provide a service that is of international standard and we can now offer it. The decision about which system to use was taken after looking at options that are in place at some of the most efficient ISO tank hubs globally. Ours is similar to that used in Singapore,” he said. Apart from its clearing mechanism, it has also built in a liquid run-off removal system that will maintain Unitainer’s policy of avoiding any seepage into the sand or leaks into the harbour itself just 500 metres away. “We have always been aware of our responsibility and the need to control our run-off has been one of the factors that has hindered our expansion in the past. By including effluent removal into the new model, we have been able to increase our cleaning capacity without any damage,” he explained.
