More than two dozen people were missing and feared dead after a cargo ship was hit by Tropical Storm Chaba in the South China Sea, reported The Weather Channel. The ship reportedly broke in two and sank on Saturday (July 2) after crew members had difficulty navigating during the storm.
Three members of the crew have been rescued by the Hong Kong government flying service, but it is believed that 27 other members were swept away by the water. The chances of survival of the missing crew are assumed to be “very slim”, according to authorities.
In Hong Kong, three people have been injured, while 88 others sought refuge in one of the temporary shelters. There have been several reports of fallen trees, and one report of dangerous flooding.
The tropical storm made landfall west of Hong Kong in southern China as a typhoon.
