Road transporters have expressed concern about reports of an outbreak of Ebola in the Democratic Republic of the Congo – which is already reeling from the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Health officials in the country fear the collapse of the country’s health system.

According to a member of the Transit Assistance Bureau (Transist), officials have confirmed the outbreak in several towns in the east of the country.

“The Minister of Health, Eteni Longondo, announced that the first contagion occurred in Butembo, where a woman died from the disease. The government started an investigation to locate the people with whom the victim came in contact to prevent further infections,” the Transist member said.

Ebola first emerged in the country in 1976 and has since reappeared 11 times, the most lethal in 2018 when it killed more than 2 200 people.
