Transnet plans to dispose of 15 commercial properties across South Africa as it continues to shed non-core assets:
- Umlazi Mega City Mall, Durban Station Precinct No 1 and Port Shepstone’s Oribi Plaza in KwaZulu-Natal
- Johannesburg’s iconic Carlton Centre (previously Transnet’s corporate headquarters) and Kempton Park’s 368 595 square metre Avion Park Golf Course in Gauteng
- The Kenridge/Willowbridge Precinct, Bellville Marshalling Yard, Roggebaai Locality Plan in the Foreshore Precinct (comprising prime urban real estate) and a portion of commercial land currently occupied by a Woodstock motor dealership in the Western Cape
- The Arcadia Park commercial site in Buffalo City and Mount Frere Shopping Centre in the Eastern Cape
- The Bloemfontein Golf Course and clubhouse in the Free State
- Messina Superspar in Musina, Limpopo, on the Zimbabwe border corridor
Transnet published a notice of its intention to invite requests for proposals for the properties in the Government Gazette on Monday, August 24.
The notice was issued in accordance with Section 54 of the Public Finance Management Act, which requires public entities to notify the responsible minister and obtain approval for certain significant transactions, including the disposal of major assets.
Transnet said national, provincial and municipal government departments, state-owned companies and other public entities will be given the first opportunity to express interest in acquiring, using, leasing or otherwise taking transfer of the properties for public-sector purposes.
Interested public entities have 30 days from the publication of the notice to submit expressions of interest to the Department of Transport.
Submissions must identify the properties, intended public use and budget or other funding.
If no formal interest is received from a government department, state-owned company or qualifying public entity within the 30-day period, Transnet will proceed with a public request for proposals process open to private-sector bidders.
