Transnet Pipelines marks 60th anniversary

Transnet Pipelines (TPL) celebrated 60 years of service to South Africa's fuel and energy logistics sector at a high-level business and stakeholder event on Wednesday.

The event commemorated the anniversary milestone, bringing together government representatives, industry stakeholders, customers, regulators and strategic partners to reflect on TPL's role in enabling energy security, industrial development and economic growth.

TPL chief executive, Sibongiseni Khathi, said the occasion was an opportunity to honour the organisation's legacy and commitment to communities that hosted its infrastructure and to engage stakeholders on the future of pipeline infrastructure in a changing energy landscape.

Delivering the keynote address, Transnet board chairperson, Andile Sangqu, emphasised the strategic importance of TPL as a national asset, underscoring the role of sound governance, long-term investment and resilience in safeguarding energy security and economic stability.

Transnet Group chief executive, Michelle Phillips, reflected on Transnet’s Reinvent for Growth strategy, outlining how the group was repositioning its businesses to deliver sustainable value.

She reaffirmed Transnet’s commitment to supporting Transnet Pipelines through targeted investment, operational focus and strategic alignment to ensure the long-term resilience and relevance of pipeline infrastructure.

Government leaders, including the Premier of Gauteng and representatives from the office of the Premier of KwaZulu-Natal, highlighted the infrastructure's importance in driving provincial and local economic development, industrialisation and aviation fuel security.

Transnet Pipelines owns, manages and operates South Africa's 3 114 km high-pressure petroleum and gas pipeline network – the largest multi-product pipeline in Southern Africa. The network starts in Durban and traverses five provinces: KwaZulu-Natal, Free State, Gauteng, Mpumalanga and North West.

It transports approximately 16 billion litres of product annually, including crude oil, diesel, petrol, jet fuel and methane-rich gas, using environmentally responsible methods to ensure security of supply to the inland market with optimum efficiencies.

The country’s first long-distance fuel pipeline was commissioned in 1965.
