South Africa’s logistics sector is awaiting word from Transnet about Friday’s meeting that the state-owned freight and rail company is said to have had with the Truckers’ Association of South Africa (Tasa) about intended labour action.
A message from the manager of the Port of Cape Town, Mpumi Dweba-Kwetana, said: “We are on full alert following receipt of notice from the truckers’ association regarding a looming strike.”
She said the parastatal would be meeting with the truckers at both the ports of Cape Town and Durban today (February 5).”
The spectre of strike action comes amid manifold challenges routinely facing ports like Cape Town.
Said Dweba-Kwetana: “The container terminal is still in recovery mode after being windbound and is doing its utmost to normalise operations.”
Part of progress at the port, she added, related to the ship repair facility that was doing well.
