WHILE AFRICA may be a natural market for South Africa with many projects on the move, knowing the ropes will help to minimise the risks, says Safcor Panalpina’s Wally Hoddinott.
“You need a reliable partner in the country of destination who is able to provide up-to-date knowledge of the local import regulations and inspection procedures.
“It is also important to be aware of the different airlines and services that are on offer as direct flights are invariably more expensive but less risky when moving your cargo. For some destinations in West Africa, it makes more sense to move the cargo via Europe,” says Hoddinott.
“One of the main difficulties in moving cargo by air into Africa is that most of the airlines are passenger driven in terms of the aircraft chosen and the schedule offered, and currently there is also little two way cargo traffic to develop consistent freighter services.”
