ADDING TO its dedicated service to Mozambique, Ikamiji Freight has now started a tanker service to supplement its current general road freight products.
“Our general service is transport into Mozambique and the completion of the necessary export documentation,” said company owner Kevin Gesseau. “We carry full truck loads, groupage and full container loads (FCLs).”
The new offering is two tanker rigs hauling between Durban and Mozambique’s capital
and main port city of Maputo, with each
unit doing two return trips a week - carrying
loads of tallow and PFAD (industrial oil).
While most of the cargoes for the entire operation are Johannesburg-sourced, Durban and Cape Town are both growing, Gesseau told FTW.
Ikamiji has also noted a growing number of full truck loads going into northern Mozambique as the country develops. Although Maputo still remains the main destination, said Gesseau, “more and more people are looking at the tremendous potential up north”.
He also told FTW that the types of cargo are changing to match the development - with less and less construction material, for example, in the order books, and more semi-finished products and raw materials for transformation.
“We are keeping quite busy meeting the market demand,” said Gesseau.
To serve this demand, Ikamiji currently has
18 vehicle units in its fleet - 15 tri-axle and three interlink trailers.
The new Ikabulk tanker division is already looking at adding another tanker to its present two units before October - “because this is working very well,” said Gesseau.
The company also plans to add a third vehicle to its fleet of two trucks based in Mozambique itself.
A good point for the company, added Gesseau, is that all its work is contracted.
“That gives us guaranteed volumes,” he said, “around which we can plan our fleet and their schedules to offer us full maximisation.”
