COMMERCIAL TRANSPORT is now being delayed at Beit Bridge for up to a week, compared with three days previously, because customs officials are inspecting virtually every truck.

The Transport Operators Association in Zimbabwe says the delays have worsened considerably over the past few weeks.

Says chief executive Arthur Sandwith: Traffic for the north is now bypassing Zimbabwe in favour of Botswana, because there is less delay at the border, even though there is still a ferry at the Zambian border. But the construction of the new bridge there will make a tremendous difference, to the point where I foresee Zambia sending much more of its traffic through Walvis Bay.

Zimbabwe stands to lose greatly and we are not doing much about it. By Martin Rushmere
