Telecoms taper off

… but demand for mining equipment is sustained Kevin Mayhew THE DELIVERY of telecommunications equipment into Africa – which has been a dominant feature of air charter work in past years – has tapered off, but the demand for mining equipment is being sustained. Johannesburg International Airport-based Air Care Cargo’s (ACC) Paul Volck said most of the mining equipment appeared to be for contract work and not for purchase by recipients in the country of destination. ACC specialises in handling charter flights into Africa. “The type of products we move change over time. Last year we flew just about everything outside of bricks and cement for the construction of a new hotel in Kigali, Rwanda. Telecommunications installations are not as prevalent as they were but mining equipment is a regular mover for contract work, particularly in Lagos, Nigeria. “There is a bit of a lull at the moment but generally we experience few problems with movement into Africa if the documentation and payments are in order,” he added.
