The Tanzanian government has committed to transforming the country's transport sector by ensuring that all its main corridors are accessible throughout the year.
This is not only vital for Tanzania's trade but also for some of its landlocked neighbours, such as Zambia, that require its railways and ports for their exports and imports.
Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa made this commitment during the launch of a digital database for truck drivers in the country.
The government has completed the construction of 2 183.82 kilometres of tar roads, and a further 14 348 kilometres are gravel-grade.
The government has also been rehabilitating various roads to make them passable throughout the year.
The expansion and improvement of roads and ports have significantly contributed to an increase in the amount of cargo entering the country through ports by an average of 18% in three consecutive years.
The government has reduced delays at the Port of Dar es Salaam from 14 days to six. The government has also heightened aviation by expanding airports, including adding more aircraft to Air Tanzania Company Limited.
The government is urging truck owners to support its efforts so that the country can serve as a transport hub in Africa.
